A few questions:
Are you looking for city or suburbs?
What gear do you currently own?
What components specifically are you looking for?
What dealers have you visited so far?
What is your current budget for components?
Are you looking at non local dealers as well?
Have shopped at Audio Consultants in Evanston for decades and they have always done right by me. The owner, Simon Zreczny, is an old school gentleman and a man of the highest integrity. Staff are knowledgeable and have been there for a long, long time. They get my highest recommendation.
Well, it’s actually a more complicated question: I’m coming to an “un-conference” in Chicago at the end of January that brings together ~300 people in tech and the arts. Everyone can arrange their own topic or demo to present. Given the high number of engineers, I’d love to blow their minds with a demo of how ethernet or USB cable can change the sound of a system (something I’ve heard myself at several audio shows, including RMAF). My only hope of bringing this off is with the cooperation of a local dealer who would be willing to do the demo (and a good opportunity to get in front of 300 potential customers). I should probably also reach out to Audioquest and Nordost direct, if anyone has contacts there (Mr. Mejias, I tried you on FB Messenger!).
You might have better luck with the manufacturer than a specific dealer. Audio Consultants is a good local dealer. I think the challenge in Chicago would be finding a dealer who would find this worth his or her time (saying this based on the dealers I have visited, not that it would not be worthwhile). Sorry, it’s kinda a funky audio market compared to other cities.
